What does freight adjustment mean on Flipkart?
Freight adjustment meaning in Flipkart, in English and Hindi: why your shipping fee changes after an order, how weight disputes happen and how to raise one.
You open your Flipkart settlement and see a line called freight adjustment, or a shipping fee that is higher than you expected. This guide explains what it means in practice, why it happens and what you can do about it.
One thing up front. Flipkart does not define the term freight adjustment on its public seller pages. What follows is based on Flipkart’s own published shipping rules, checked 2 November 2026. For the exact reason behind a charge on your account, check the order in the payments section of Seller Hub.
What does freight adjustment mean on Flipkart?
Freight means shipping. An adjustment is a change to a fee that was already charged. So a freight adjustment is a change to the shipping fee on an order, after the order was first settled.
Flipkart’s fees page explains the rule. Flipkart measures the weight of the final packed product and applies the matching rate. Flipkart charges shipping on the actual weight or the volumetric weight of the parcel, whichever is higher. So if your packed parcel turns out heavier or bigger than your listing says, the shipping fee goes up. The difference can show up later as an adjustment.
Why does Flipkart change the shipping fee?
The shipping fee depends on two things: weight and distance.
Weight. Flipkart charges on actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. Volumetric weight reflects how much space the parcel takes. Flipkart explains it as a way to charge for light items that take up a lot of space. A light product in a big box is charged like a heavy one.
Distance. Flipkart has three shipping zones:
- Local: shipped within a city
- Zonal: shipped within one zone (North, South, East or West)
- National: shipped across zones
Flipkart does not publish its volumetric weight formula or its shipping rates on its public pages. Your exact commission, fixed fee, collection fee and shipping rates are in the Rate Card inside Seller Hub.
What does a freight adjustment look like on an order?
Example. You sell a cushion cover. Your listing says the packed parcel weighs 300 g in a small pouch. But you ship it in a large carton to protect it.
- At order time, Flipkart charges shipping on the 300 g in your listing.
- The carton takes up much more space, so its volumetric weight is far higher than 300 g.
- Shipping should have been charged on the higher, volumetric weight. That puts the parcel in a higher weight slab.
- The difference between the two shipping fees is deducted later, as an adjustment.
The fix is not to argue with the carton. Either use smaller packaging or update the listing to match the real packed size.
How do you dispute a freight adjustment?
Flipkart does not publish a step by step dispute process, a time limit or an evidence list on its public pages. So start inside your account:
- Find the order in the payments section of Seller Hub and note the adjustment amount.
- Compare the weight and size Flipkart used with the packaging details in your listing.
- Collect proof. Photos of the packed parcel on a weighing scale, and with a measuring tape along its length, breadth and height. Keep the invoice and dispatch details too.
- Raise a ticket with Seller Support from Seller Hub, and attach your proof.
Act fast, as any time limit will be in your Seller Hub, not on public pages. Flipkart’s terms of use also ask sellers to keep proof of delivery documents for 3 years from dispatch, so keep your shipping records.
How do you avoid freight adjustments?
- Weigh and measure the packed parcel, not the product, and enter those numbers in your listing.
- Re-check your packaging details under My Listings whenever you change your box. Flipkart’s own developer docs point sellers there for weight errors.
- Use the smallest safe packaging. Less empty space means lower volumetric weight.
- Check settlements every week, so a wrong charge does not repeat across hundreds of orders.
Shipping is one of several Flipkart fees. Our Flipkart seller fees guide covers them all, and Flipkart seller payment terms explains how to read a settlement.
