Amazon seller registration fees in India: is it free?
Is it free to sell on Amazon India? What Amazon charges at sign-up and after your first order, and the GSTIN, PAN and bank details you need to register.
Before you register on Amazon.in, you probably want to know two things. What will it cost to sign up? And what papers do you need? This guide answers both, using only what Amazon says on its own seller pages, checked 2 November 2026.
Is there a registration fee to sell on Amazon India?
Amazon states that listing on Amazon.in is free, and that it charges you when you make a sale. You can read this in Amazon’s seller FAQ.
Amazon’s beginner’s guide sets out the selling fee as referral fee plus closing fee plus shipping fee plus other fees. Each of these is tied to an order. So the cost of selling starts with your first sale, not at sign-up.
What does Amazon charge once you start selling?
When you make a sale, Amazon deducts its fees and pays you the rest:
- Referral fee: a percentage of the selling price, 0% to 30% depending on category and price.
- Closing fee: a flat fee per item, ₹2 to ₹101 with Easy Ship and Self Ship.
- Shipping fee: called the weight handling fee, if Amazon delivers for you. See Amazon shipping fees for sellers.
Optional paid services cost extra. For example, FBA storage if Amazon keeps your stock, and advertising if you run ads.
Marketplaces charge 18% GST on their fees (Amazon states this on its fees page). Check the tax invoice in your seller account. The full list of fees is in our Amazon seller fees guide, and our guide on how much Amazon takes from sellers adds it all up.
For when Amazon pays you, check the Payments section in Seller Central. It shows your payment dates and every deduction.
What do you need to register as an Amazon seller?
Amazon’s sell online page says you need just two things to start: GST or PAN, and an active bank account. The beginner’s guide lists the full set:
- Email ID
- Active mobile number. Amazon verifies it with an OTP.
- GST number, or PAN details if you sell only in a GST-exempt category
- Active bank account, where Amazon sends your payments
The seller FAQ also asks for your business details, contact details and basic information about your business.
Can you sell on Amazon without GST?
Only if you sell GST-exempt goods. Amazon’s registration guide says you can sell GST-exempt products without a GST number by giving your PAN details. Books are the example Amazon gives. Its beginner’s guide adds certain handicrafts and some edible goods.
For everything else, Amazon says a valid GST number is mandatory. And if you start selling taxable goods later, Amazon’s FAQ says you need to register for GST as per GST laws.
How do you register, step by step?
Amazon’s registration guide walks through these steps:
- Create your account. Enter your name, mobile number and email, and set a password.
- Verify your phone with an OTP.
- Enter your GST number, or choose the option for selling only tax-exempt products such as books.
- Add your bank account.
- Set your pickup address. It must be in the same state as your GST registration.
Amazon says it takes about 15 minutes to set up your account. GST verification can take up to 72 hours, and you can carry on with the other steps while it is checked. If the check fails, you can upload your GSTIN certificate.
What should you do before your first listing?
Sign-up is free, but your first sale is not. Before you list:
- Find your category’s rates on our Amazon fee pages, for example kitchen or beauty.
- Learn the closing fee, which applies to every item.
- Put your price, cost and fees into the profit calculator to check you make money on each order.
