How much does Amazon take from sellers in India?

Amazon's total cut per order in India: referral, closing and shipping fees plus GST, worked out for 23 categories with a full example order.

By the SellerAssist DeskUpdated 6 min read

Amazon does not take one single cut. It charges up to three fees on each order, adds GST on them, and sends you the rest. How big that cut is depends on your category, your price and the size of your parcel.

This guide adds it all up for the 23 categories we track. Every rate comes from Amazon’s fees and pricing page, checked 22 October 2026.

What does Amazon take from each order?

On a normal Easy Ship order, Amazon deducts:

  • Referral fee: Amazon’s commission. It is 0% to 30% of the selling price, set by category and price band. 18 of our 23 categories pay 0% up to ₹1,000.
  • Closing fee: a flat amount per item, ₹2 to ₹101 with Easy Ship and Self Ship. See the closing fee guide.
  • Weight handling fee: Amazon’s delivery charge, set by parcel weight. On Easy Ship it starts at ₹55 for the first 500 g at the Standard level. See Amazon shipping fees for sellers.
  • GST on fees: 18% on top of all three.

What is left is your payout. The full list of fees is in our Amazon seller fees guide.

Why do cheap items lose a bigger share?

The closing fee and the delivery fee are flat amounts. They do not shrink when your price does. So on a low priced item, they eat a large share, even when the referral fee is 0%.

Example. This is our office and stationery order:

Our example is "A5 ruled notebooks, pack of 4", sold for ₹349 in the Office products - Office supplies fee category and sent with Easy Ship in a 800 g parcel.

Customer pays₹349.00
Referral fee (0%)₹0.00
Closing fee (Easy Ship)−₹23.00
Weight handling (800 g)−₹75.00
GST on fees (18%)−₹17.64
Amazon sends you₹233.36

Amazon keeps ₹115.64, which is 33.1% of the price, including 18% GST on its fees. See the full breakdown on the Amazon office and stationery fees page.

The referral fee here is 0%, yet Amazon still keeps about a third of the price. All of it is the closing fee, the delivery fee and GST on them.

Does Amazon take less on expensive items?

As a share of the price, usually yes. The flat fees matter less as the price goes up. Our mobile phones and tablets example at ₹12,999 pays ₹948.66 in total, only 7.3% of the price.

But the referral fee grows with the price, and many categories switch from 0% to a full rate above ₹1,000. Heavy items also pay more for delivery. Our car and bike accessories example at ₹1,299 has the highest share in the table, at 37.0%.

What is not part of Amazon’s cut?

A few deductions look like Amazon fees but are not:

  • GST on your product. The customer pays it, and you pay it to the government. It was never your money.
  • TCS and TDS. Amazon deducts these taxes from your payout and deposits them in your name. You claim both back. TCS under GST is 0.5%. TDS on e-commerce payments is 0.1%, under Section 393(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from 1 April 2026 (earlier Section 194-O). Our Amazon seller fees guide explains how.
  • GST on fees, if you claim it. If you are GST registered, you can claim the 18% GST on Amazon’s fees as input tax credit.

Your own costs are not in the table either: product cost, packaging, ads and returns. Those decide your real margin. Our guide on how to calculate real profit per order covers them.

How can I make Amazon take less?

You cannot remove the fees, but you can control a few things:

  • Watch the price bands. An item at ₹1,000 pays a ₹48 Easy Ship closing fee. At one rupee more it pays ₹79. Many referral fees also jump above ₹1,000.
  • Cut your parcel size. Amazon charges the higher of actual and volumetric weight, so a smaller box can drop you into a cheaper weight slab.
  • Check your fee category. A listing in the wrong category can pay a higher referral fee. Your fee preview in Seller Central shows which one applies.
  • Claim GST credit on Amazon’s fees if you are registered.

Then put your real numbers into the profit calculator to see what you keep after every cost. Browse Amazon fees by category to find your rates.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon take a commission on every sale?

Amazon charges a referral fee, its commission, on most sales. But 18 of the 23 categories we track pay 0% referral fee up to ₹1,000. The closing fee applies to every item, whatever the price, and delivery is charged on top.

Is the GST on Amazon fees a cost?

Amazon adds 18% GST to every fee. If you are GST registered, you can claim it as input tax credit, so it does not cost you in the end. If you are not registered, it is a real cost.

Are TCS and TDS part of what Amazon takes?

No. They are taxes Amazon deducts from your payout and deposits in your name. TCS under GST is 0.5%. TDS on e-commerce payments is 0.1%, under Section 393(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from 1 April 2026 (earlier Section 194-O). TCS shows in your GST portal and TDS in your Form 26AS. You claim both back, so they are not fees.

Is FBA cheaper than Easy Ship?

It depends on the item. FBA weight handling starts lower, at ₹39 for the first 500 g within a region at the Standard level, but FBA adds a pick and pack fee of ₹17 per unit for standard items up to 1 kg, plus storage. Compare both for your product in the fee preview in Seller Central.

Where can I see my exact Amazon fees?

Open the fee preview for your listing in Seller Central. It shows the referral, closing and weight handling fees Amazon will charge at your price. You can then put those fees into a profit calculator to see what you keep.
